The plants are indoors, so I'm not really sure where the mites came from. We did transplant a couple already-grown plants that we got at the farmer's market, so maybe from there? The downside of having them indoors is that there aren't any mite predators around.

Are you growing indoor bananas?

Are your plants indoors or outdoors?

No sign of mites, though our garden is indoors. They apparently will do great mischief to dwarf banana plants, too.

Hey, Ian. I'm very impressed. I was one of the ones to laugh at your little experiment but sadly my own row of beans has not even been planted despite the garden being tilled weeks ago. You shame me. I will finish the planting tomorrow. (did have two ripe strawberries earlier this week)

"he’s right that it’s reasonable to start asking what that way might be."

The best writers ('bloggers') do earn money from advertising. For musicians, designers, visual artists, artisans, etc; the internet is a huge promotional and networking tool.

More complex mechanisms are there for the invention/exploitation (and can think of examples).

I think that at some point many traditional media institutions are going to buckle under the weight of cheapskate-but-demanding consumers who want everything for free, and want it good. Something has to give, but I honestly think that the free market will provide after that messy time.

I don't think Lanier is terribly invested in the continued existence of "old media". He just wants to see artists able to make a living doing their art. As to art will find a way: we've had the internet for a while now, and I think he's right that it's reasonable to start asking what that way might be.

I'm all for the meritocracy too, provided we can figure out how to make it work.

“The sort of “fresh, radical culture” you expect to see celebrated in the online world these days is a pretty mashup of preweb culture."

Art always mines the old. The internet is populist and gives voice to millions who never had it; is it any wonder that the signal-to-noise ratio has gone way down? Millions of people now have a voice and still nothing to say.

"Once “old media” is dead, how will the creative people be able to keep creating?"

Art will find a way. It always does. As far as I'm concerned, old media can't die fast enough. Let the meritocracy begin.
